Youth+Sports - How it works

General Information about Youth + Sports

Youth and Sport (Y+S) is the largest federal sports promotion programme and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022. The aim of Y+S is to promote child- and youth-oriented sport in Switzerland. Through the training and further education of Y+S-Instructors, Y+S succeeds in supporting the development and fulfilment of young people from a pedagogical, social and health point of view. The Y+S-system involves cooperation between the Confederation, the cantons and sports associations.

The Confederation supports clubs, national sports federations and cantons in their work with children and young people and in training and further education. In addition to direct financial support, the Confederation offers training and further education courses and provides teaching materials and equipment for hire.

The cantons, with their cantonal sports offices, are the closest partners for the Federal Office of Sport FOSPO. They take care of the administration of the Y+S-courses and -camps and organise Y+S-Instructor courses and further education modules. The dedicated experts of the national sports associations support the development and implementation of education and training in their sport. The sports clubs provide age-appropriate and sustainable sports activities and use the Y+S-subsidies in a targeted manner for children's and youth sports.Schools and municipalities offer children and young people further opportunities to participate in sports in the spirit of Y+S. Schools organise voluntary school sports courses and camps. Municipalities provide sports clubs and other users with infrastructure and run courses and camps. The local movement and sports networks create synergies and facilitate the coordination of the various local actors.
